When will my baby sit down?
Most babies start learning to sit between four and nine months of age.
Sitting your baby means that he or she is one step closer to walking. Usually, in fact, he will sit down after crawling, but don't worry if he does them in a different order. Every baby grows at its own pace.
In order to be able to sit, it must develop strong muscles in the head and neck. These muscles develop gradually from birth. You will see your baby strengthening these muscles by lifting his head while lying down.
Like any new skill, sitting takes practice. In the first few days, your baby will lean on his arms to find his balance. Make sure there are plenty of cushions in case it tips over.
As the muscles get stronger, he will be able to sit unsupported and see the world very differently !
So to help him achieve this little feat, you can hold him in your arms while sitting, resting his back and head on your torso, or place toys at eye level, or a mirror, or yourself singing and talking to him to keep him interested.
In other words, give him extra incentives that will motivate him to want to stay seated.
Keep in mind that babies grow differently, some faster than others.
If you are concerned about your baby's growth or if he or she is not sitting up at nine months, contact your doctor immediately.
