How many times have you woken up in the morning and before you even open your eyes you think you want to sleep some more? Is this something you think about at night when you decide to watch another episode of your favorite show?

The importance of sleep first and foremost for our health and then for beauty has been reflected in countless pages, both in print and online. Very few people, however, have the luxury of enjoying a quality sleep on a daily basis.

It is therefore beneficial to remind ourselves of the reasons why we need to ensure a good (night) sleep.

During sleep some very important processes occur that are related to the secretion of hormones, which are essential for our physical and mental function and of course for our beauty.

Children, for example, “grow up” during sleep, as the peak of growth hormone secretion occurs when they are asleep. Cortisol, one of the most important hormones for the body, is also secreted for the most part during sleep. This hormone is also called the “stress hormone” and is responsible for regulating blood pressure, proper immune function and metabolism. It is worth noting that in medicine, the term stress does not mean stress, but the ability of the body to cope with a need, for example if someone has the strength to walk or run.

The recommended duration of sleep is at least 7 hours for adults and the sleep process should start no later than 12 o’clock at night. In this case it is important not to interrupt our sleep before 6 am, as the peak of hormone secretion occurs after about 5-6 hours of sleep.

When we sleep, the skin heals and regenerates, the tissues are repaired and dead cells are replaced. Our body eliminates toxins and the development of memory and learning takes place.

It is no exaggeration to say that sleep is one of the best beauty treatments and a source of youth.

How we maximize the benefits of sleep and the "Box Breathing" technique

To maximize the benefits of sleep and wake up in the morning refreshed with glowing skin, it is necessary to “prepare” for a quality sleep:

  • Drink a glass of water half an hour before you go to sleep
  • Remove all electronic devices from the room and turn off all light sources during the night
  • Make sure your room is adequately ventilated during the day
  • Cleanse and moisturise your face before you sleep
  • Prefer satin or silk pillowcases and light bedding

A very common problem nowadays is the inability to relax before going to sleep. Thousands of thoughts come at the wrong time and fill us with anxiety.

One way to relax and break the vicious cycle of thoughts is the box breathing technique.

  • Close your eyes and take a breath in through your nose counting to 4
  • Hold your breath counting again to 4
  • Exhale slowly, counting again to 4
  • Repeat the above procedure at least 3 times or ideally for 5 minutes

After a few minutes you will have calmed your mind and be ready for a quality beauty sleep!
