How the oximeter works: Spectrophotometry is the operating principle behind the pulse oximeter. It detects a visible red light that passes through the blood and is detected on the opposite side by another part of the device known as a photodetector. This is how we get oxygen saturation results.

The light sensors in the device detect red blood cells carrying oxygen and can also detect deoxygenated blood. Oxygenated blood appears darker than deoxygenated blood and the light sensors are very sensitive to this change in the blood. It measures the variations in light absorbed by oxygenated and deoxygenated blood and is displayed as a reading on the device’s display.
